Aidan Carroll

Aidan Carroll is a versatile and thriving bassist living in Brooklyn, NY. Music has been at the
forefront of Aidan's life since as a young boy of 8 years old when he had a vision that he
would play music for the rest of his life. Never looking back, he has since been following the
path of an aspiring musician in all its twists and turns. Aidan Carroll's passion, determination,
and creativity for music has given him the opportunity to perform with such diverse and
esteemed artists as John Abercrombie, Greg Hutchinson, Ben Monder, Aaron Goldberg,
Donald Fagen, Warren Haynes, Melody Gardot, and more. Carroll has performed at such
international and stateside festivals as the Juans Les Pins Festival, Amazonas Jazz Festival,
Pontevedra Jazz Festival, Bonnaroo, New Orleans Voodoo Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival,
Mountain Jam and many others. His overarching concept and approach to music which
combines heavy groove with melodic improvisation and a deep sense of harmony makes him
a unique and respected bassist in New York and beyond.

Hailing from the unlikely city of Oklahoma City, Carroll grew up with his musical parents'
unwavering support, and studied music avidly from a young age. He started playing drums in
his father's band at age 10, and studied classical percussion as well as rock n roll and r&b
drumming. After winning numerous awards on classical marimba and percussion, Carroll
was drawn to the bass and to the world of jazz and improvisation. He attended the
prestigious arts high school Classen School of the Advanced Studies where he eventually
switched from percussion major to bass major to play in jazz band and orchestra. During this
time Aidan sought out and listened to classic albums with an immense hunger in order to
learn and study the language of improvisation. He also performed regularly with his school
jazz band in big band and combo formats at local functions, and seasoned his experience
with several awards at state competitions. Following graduation he received a full jazz
scholarship to attend the University of Central Oklahoma. While in college, Carroll played in
the top jazz big band all four years, as well as the orchestra and wind ensemble. Beyond
playing locally and regionally with peers and mentors, during this time he received an award
for outstanding soloist at the Wichita State Jazz Fest 2003, and a scholarship for excellence
in the music program at UCO in 2005. After college Aidan was looking for an even deeper
level of experience in his musical life and started setting his sights on New York City.

After graduating and before moving to New York for grad school, Carroll was selected to
attend the prestigious Banff Creative Workshop. At Banff he was blessed with the
opportunity to study with James Genus, Donny McCaslin, Dave Douglas, Rez Abassi and
more. Aidan moved to New York in 2006 and attended The City College of New York where
he worked with mentor John Patitucci for two years and earned his Masters in Jazz
Performance. Since moving to New York Aidan has had many great opportunities working in
town and abroad. He has recorded with diverse artists like Fred Hersch, Ralph Alessi,
Seamus Blake, and toured with the Dan Tepfer Trio, Logan Richardson's SHIFT, multilingual
singer Marta Topferova, Zimbabwean singer Chiwoniso (R.I.P), Sister Sparrow and the Dirty
Birds, and Melody Gardot. Carroll also regularly works with his New York peers playing in
town with groups led by Sullivan Fortner, Chris Dingman, Julian Shore, John Raymond,
Richie Barshay, Jason Palmer and others. Aidan is also an original member, co-writer, and
co-music director of national soul-rock act Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds who he
performed, recorded and toured with from 2009-2012. While performing with the Dirty Birds
he was fortunate to get to play alongside and work with American Rock legends such as
Warren Haynes, Donald Fagen, Larry Campbell, and Randy Jackson. Most recently,
throughout 2013 Aidan performed on bass and background vocals all across Europe, Africa,
and Asia for a 4-month tour with Grammy nominated singer-songwriter and Verve artist
Melody Gardot.

Currently Aidan is freelancing in New York with various groups, working on the release of his
debut album, and performing with Grammy winner Lisa Fischer. Above all, Aidan Carroll truly
believes in sharing his passion for music and the bass with audiences across the world, and
continues to follow this dream no matter what it takes.
